Kalihi Waena SY 2020 Q1 Update #8

Aloha Lions Ohana,

Tomorrow is the last day of quarter 1 and WOW what a crazy quarter it was.  We all hope quarter 2 will be a bit calmer and the amount of COVID-19 goes down so we can begin to transition back to normal.  In the meantime, I want to remind you of a few things.

  1. Quarter 2 Supply Pickup: Tomorrow afternoon (12:00-2:15 PM) we will have our quarter 2 supply pickup. All students or parents need to come to the school to pick up work supplies for their students.  Grades 3 and 5 will set up at the cafeteria doors.  All other classes will be in their classrooms.  Parents who have not completed the opening of the school year packet will be provided another set of paperwork and encouraged to turn it in at one of the areas manned by our office staff.  Parking will be in the grass by the basketball court.  Any forms that are in the packet from the school, including English Learner notification forms, need to be returned to the school as soon as possible.  Thank you for your cooperation.
  2. #usewhatyouhavechallenge: Last week we had our first virtual family activity #usewhatyouhavechallenge. We demonstrated cooking fried rice, only using ingredients we had on hand. Families were challenged to do the same, working together to create a delicious dish with ingredients they already had at home. Oh boy, our Kalihi Waena families did not disappoint! The video and photo submissions we got were absolutely amazing! The families who participated were entered in a drawing for a “Fried Rice Kit” which included a bag of rice, shoyu, oyster sauce, 6 cans of SPAM, and 5 dozen eggs! We would like to congratulate 4th grader Zayne P for being a drawing winner! http://bit.ly/kweswinner1  His video making Yakisoba was mouth-watering, and we hope Zayne and his family enjoys their Fried Rice Kit. Also, since everyone’s video and photo submissions were so impressive, we decided to award the other participants with a bag of rice! We will be sharing the videos and photos on our school website http://www.kwes.org. Thank you to all our families who took on our challenge and shared their creativity. Another #challenge is right around the corner, so stay tuned Lions!
  3. Parent-Teacher Communication Day:is still scheduled for October 21st.  It will be an early dismissal day at 12:30 PM that day.
  4. Change in Lunch/Breakfast Procedure: Starting on October 12th, our first day back to school, breakfast and lunch will only be served during the lunchtime window from 11 am - 11:45 am for our on-line students. Students will receive lunch and breakfast for the next day. All grab-and-go meals will be distributed on the parking lot side of the cafeteria. This new procedure does not affect the face-to-face students. Please note, students may receive a meal from any school in Kalihi. Any parents picking up for their child/ren at another school will need to show proof of their child/ren’s identification (e.g., school ID, birth certificate.)
  5. New website: We launched our new school website, kwes.org. Please check our website for the latest information, our school calendar, breakfast/lunch menu, and contact information. It's a work in progress.  We hope to add additional videos and photos soon.
  6. Federal Survey Card: You will be getting the annual federal survey card in the mail around October 14th. It is very important you complete this survey in order for us to receive our federal funds.  A prize will be given to the first class to get 100% of their surveys turned in.

I want to thank you all for your continued strength this quarter.  I hope you all have a great break and can relax for a while.  Keep strong Lions.  Remember, We are the Lions.  We are the Future!

Aloha,

Mr. Larkin
